The challenges of living in the countryside
What are the challenges of living in the countryside? While many city folk may have the image of sleepy hamlets occasionally disturbed by men in red coats chasing an animal in a red coat, the truth is that rural life is not always as idyllic as that painted.
City problems of unemployment, poor housing and social exclusion are often present but not always visible. Poor transport links, expensive goods and low pay are also prevalent. And with high land prices and a shortage of affordable housing, more young people are leaving the communities of their childhood. The result? A demographic slide that leads to school closures and the loss of local facilities.
But there are many positives. Advancement in technology means that people now have the opportunity to work from home using the Internet. Technology companies can set up and flourish alongside traditional industries. Strong local support groups and organisations help foster a strong community where crime is often minimal. And of course there are the wonderful views, the fresh air, great local produce and outdoor pursuits.
So whether you are somebody from the country, who wants to stay, or a city dweller wanting a change of scene, rural living offers many challenges to be overcome yet opportunities not to be missed.
