THE AIRIGH RANGE
Our new Airigh collection is inspired by the sheilings (àirighean) that were once common in the Scottish Highlands. These small dwellings were occupied while the cattle were out on their summer pastures. Our range of Airighs are an extremely modern interpretation of this building type.
Airighs might be built "off grid" in remote locations, on a croft, or set within a garden. They are adaptable for many purposes – whether as a simple starter home, extra guest accommodation or as studio or loom shed. Depending upon their use, they will have to meet different planning and building regulations.
One key aspect of the Airigh project was to develop a low-cost solution that would allow crofters to provide high-quality holiday lets. A simple building, with a wall of glass and terrace to face the views will work wonderfully well in many of our remote and beautiful communities, and could provide an important source of revenue in rural areas. More information about starting a holiday-let business can be found here.
Our Airigh designs are easy to transport and build, needing only two people to handle the simple panels. They can be erected to ‘wind and weathertight’ stage within a couple of days, keeping costs down. And because of their low profile, small footprint and cultural continuity, we have found during discussions with planners that they are often allowed to be built in places where a more traditional house would not get planning consent. The idea is that not only do they make a small imprint on the landscape – due to their point foundations, which minimise earth works and costs – they blend in.
Sheilings were often built by people within the community and reflected the character of their owners. Similarly, our Airighs can be modified and clad in a variety of materials so that each one is distinctive. HebHomes can provide an erection service, or you might choose to build it yourself.
